Artists can unify their work in several ways as unity is the appearance or condition of oneness. which means all the elements in the work belong together to make up a coherent and harmonious whole. In the painting above by "Fra Angelico" called "The Anunciation". you can see how the work is unified thru similar patterns of shapes to give you a sense of variety and the balance between heavy and cool colors give you a feeling of diversity. to make all the elements in this piece belong together as a whole.

Asymmetrical balance in a painting means the left and right side are not the same balance. so in order to give you a symmetrical feel various elements are balanced according to their visual weights and forms. large forms are heavy and more attention getting then small forms. therefore a large form can be balanced by 2 small forms. Also colors, as warm colors appear heavier then cool colors.  in the painting above by "Johannes Vermeer", you can see the use of a symmetrical balance by the way the artist incorporated large areas of shadow with small areas of light. Also the woman used as the focal point in almost the middle of the painting is then counter balanced by large the plan empty area to the left side of the drawing for balance. The blue colors on both sides and the hints of yellow on the window curtain and to the far right as the painting edges creates that whole balance in asymmetrical work.

Scale also changes the meaning of artwork in various ways one of the ways is the illusion of depth or amplified perspective. This is done by contrast of scale. Contrast of scale is to change the size of an image or to create a surreal feeling to amplify ones perspective. in the painting above you can see how the artist used contrast of scale to give you this amplified perspective of the human body body in a sort of humorous way.

Harmon intro egyptian greek assignment

Greek, Roman and Egyptian Art.

Today we will compare and contrast the qualities of specific art work between the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. Egyptian art purpose was to symbolize power and life after death. To show the power and royalty of the pharaoh and the gods. To depict Animals that were very sacred to them as most art work from Egypt tends to combine animals with humans to create god like figures or to pay homage to an animal they considered sacred. in some cases it would help them in the after life. Egyptian art was done in ceramic and limestone and embodys qualities of strength and clarity. royal portraits depicted men in the frontal position by having the left foot forward. symbolism was also key for the Egyptian art as pharaohs would have cobras on their head to indicate they were indeed a pharaoh. in the picture below  you see an Egyptian couple of royalty. you see the male is in front or in charge because of the positioning of his foot which shows his left foot forward.  the long false beard is symbolic, as well as her hands wrapped around him which is to show a certain warmth by how she is touching him.
Greek art has its similarities to Egyptian art because both show formal poses, the Greeks also used the left foot forward to show power. Greeks also depicted their god and goddesses in detailed form like the Egyptians. however the Greeks unlike the Egyptians believed that the human was the highest form the highest creation of nature. they were the closest thing to perfection. Greek art was a basis for classicism. classicism emphasized ideal proportions and a greater interest in anatomy and more relaxed poses with movement and strained emotion. in the pic below you can see the Greek art and how it depicts actual observation and mathematical calculations to create almost an exact replica of a Greek athlete who held a spear. Greek art was made with marble and was sculpted precisely.
The Romans to me was a cross between the Egyptians and Greek. the Romans are one of major power, and their art depicted a high degree of individuality old age imperfections and personal characteristics. They observed detail and physical accuracy, most roman art however is done with fresco and wall paintings. as the Romans begin to die down in power their belief switched as well. Their later art shows the Romans turning towards spiritual reality's . In the pic below you see an 8ft tall statue of the emperor Constantine. The powerful detail and real image of his face in exact form show how similar and different Romans were to the Greek and the Egyptians in terms of art. this sculpture was during the early times which showed how similar it was to the Greek art.

Joseph: Intro To Art Thru My Lenses: I was born on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, i grew up in the early 90s where graffiti art was booming. Store fronts, train carts, school walls, and roof tops become a haven for art. Art to me is you expressing yourself in a very pure form, each representation has their own meaning. I want to learn all forms of art from all over the world in all different time frames, and the meanings they posses. This will give me a overall idea into why art was created and how powerful of a tool it really is.
